About Spad

An act of doing anything starts with a thought. It just takes a simple thought to start it off. But the real challenge is to translate that thought into reality. One such thought took birth 14 years back. Four people assembled in a little room, decided to form a support group which would help spread awareness about Diabetes. It took a couple of meeting and the thought was slowly converting into reality and our Society for Prevention and Awareness came into existence.

It was decided, that they would have regular monthly meeting. Regency Hospital Limited (the largest corporate hospital of state of Uttar Pradesh, India) was kind enough to provide us the space. Initially, we invited our own patients with Diabetes (Type1 & Type2). Gradually it gained popularity and people from all over the society started coming. The motive of each monthly meeting was to discuss one issue related to diabetes. Anybody with diabetes or willing to know anything about the disease was welcome in our society. There were no charges of attending the meeting. The funds were managed from the donations given to our society which was subsequently contributed by pharmaceutical companies (as part of their social responsibilities).

As our group evolved, new likeminded people were included in our core group. We decided to have separate meetings for people with Type1 diabetes. Since then we have been having at least 4 meetings a month separately for Type1 friends. The purpose is to discuss social as well as medical issues, we not only talk about good control and HbA1c but also discuss about their studies, career, employment and even marriage.

In the span of 14 years the horizon of the group has drastically increased. We have become bigger and are now trying to touch more and more people. Our senior Type1 friends have had a big role to play in our group. They have helped our newly detected diabetic friends as well as their families. We further expanded in January 2007 as we organized the “National Type1 diabetes Meet” in Kanpur. People with Type1 Diabetes from all across the country were invited. It was 2 days event where specialist doctors, diabetic patients as well as their families all came together. Which was not only about discussing their major problems, but it was also a social gathering where their talents were showcased and they were guided in job placements.

We are now longing to touch people globally with a belief that the best pleasure a human can derive is by healing mankind.
